Hashi Unveils Testnet for Bitcoin-Backed Lending on Sui

Hashi has taken a significant step in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space by launching a testnet on Sui, offering developers a unique sandbox for Bitcoin-backed lending experiments. This initiative utilizes native BTC as collateral while implementing a robust Guardian Layer security model.

According to the protocol’s GitHub documentation, Hashi’s architecture revolves around multi-layer transaction security. It features Multi-Party Computation (MPC) threshold signatures and a 2-of-2 multisig flow that involves validators and independent guardians. While the technicalities may sound complex, the underlying objective is straightforward: to integrate Bitcoin into Sui-based DeFi in a structured manner, rather than relying on the often cumbersome cross-chain solutions.

As the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, Bitcoin is recognized for its brand and liquidity. However, leveraging it within DeFi typically necessitates wrappers, bridges, custodial solutions, or synthetic tokens. Hashi aims to create a more organized framework for BTC to facilitate lending on Sui, while ensuring that transaction security remains a priority.

It’s crucial to emphasize that this is a testnet phase, not a mainnet product handling real user assets at scale.

    TL;DR

    • Hashi has unveiled a Sui testnet dedicated to Bitcoin-backed lending infrastructure.
    • The design incorporates a Guardian Layer, MPC threshold signatures, and 2-of-2 multisig controls.
    • This system is not yet a live mainnet Bitcoin lending product.

Bitcoin Collateral: The Holy Grail of DeFi

DeFi projects have long sought the liquidity that Bitcoin offers.

With its unmatched recognition, Bitcoin has become a coveted asset in the crypto ecosystem. However, its base layer lacks the capacity for smart contract functionality seen in ecosystems like Ethereum, Sui, Solana, or Avalanche.

Consequently, the market has explored numerous avenues to make BTC usable in other networks. Solutions like Wrapped BTC, bridges, custodial tokenization, sidechains, restaking systems, and new Bitcoin DeFi protocols all attempt to solve this issue, allowing BTC holders to use their assets without liquidating them.

Lending stands out as a prime use case. If users can lock Bitcoin as collateral and borrow stablecoins or other assets, BTC can be utilized more effectively. This approach is appealing but carries significant risks.

Whenever Bitcoin transitions into another chain’s DeFi environment, critical questions arise regarding custody, collateral verification, control over transfers, and the potential failures of the bridge or signing systems.

Hashi’s Guardian Layer aims to meticulously address these concerns.

    Guardian Layer: Elevating Security Standards

The Guardian Layer introduces an additional security measure for BTC-backed activities.

Rather than relying on a single signer or a simplistic bridge mechanism, Hashi’s framework employs a 2-of-2 multisig requirement involving both validators and independent guardians. Coupled with MPC threshold signatures, this design aims to complicate unauthorized transactions and create a clear delineation between roles.

However, this does not eliminate risk entirely.

No cross-chain BTC model is devoid of risk. Potential vulnerabilities can arise from smart contract bugs, signing failures, governance errors, validator issues, and economic attacks. Yet, a layered security approach is preferable to the unrealistic notion that Bitcoin can seamlessly integrate into another DeFi ecosystem without any trade-offs.

This is why the testnet phase is so vital.

It provides developers and security researchers with the opportunity to scrutinize the model, test edge cases, and observe how the system performs under stress.

Introducing a New Narrative for Sui

For Sui, Hashi’s initiative introduces an intriguing narrative: Bitcoin-backed finance on a high-performance Layer 1.

Sui has already championed themes surrounding rapid execution, object-oriented architecture, consumer applications, and DeFi expansion. The integration of BTC collateral experiments adds another dimension to the ecosystem.

The appeal is not merely about building DeFi on Sui but rather about creating a structured way to incorporate the largest crypto asset into Sui’s DeFi landscape.

This could attract developers interested in crafting lending markets, stablecoin borrowing mechanisms, or collateralized products centered around BTC.

Nonetheless, the testnet designation is crucial.

A functioning sandbox does not imply that users should expect safe mainnet liquidity imminently. Testnets are designed for experimentation before real funds are at stake.

Prioritizing Security Over Total Value Locked (TVL)

In the crypto realm, new collateral systems are often prematurely evaluated based on total value locked.

This can be a dangerous approach.

For BTC-backed lending, the initial concern should not be “how much TVL can this attract?” but rather “does the security model function effectively?” The total value locked only gains significance once the framework has demonstrated its ability to safeguard funds, execute transactions accurately, and endure adverse conditions.

This is particularly critical when Bitcoin is involved.

BTC holders are generally more conservative than those chasing novel DeFi yields. They require compelling reasons to trust any system that exposes their assets to another chain’s lending environment.

Hashi’s testnet offers the project a chance to gradually cultivate that trust.

A Thoughtful Approach, Not a Finished Product

Hashi’s launch is noteworthy as it refrains from overselling its capabilities.
