Uber’s Stock Surges 6% Amid $10 Billion Robotaxi Initiative Backed by Strong Cash Flow

Uber Technologies shares experienced a notable rebound on Friday, rising 6.4% to close at $75.02. This surge comes as investors shifted their focus from short-term earnings concerns to the company’s robust cash generation capabilities and its ambitious long-term robotaxi goals.

The recovery followed a turbulent week in which the stock initially dipped after quarterly earnings were released but then gained approximately 10% over the last two trading sessions. This left Uber up 6.6% for the week, signaling renewed investor confidence that the company can fund its autonomous vehicle strategy while maintaining a healthy balance sheet.

A pivotal factor in this rally was the announcement that trailing free cash flow had surpassed $10 billion for the first time, as reported by the company’s financial leadership. This figure is particularly significant, as it aligns closely with Uber’s total commitment to the multi-year development and deployment of autonomous vehicles.

Cash Flow Becomes a Key Indicator

As investors scrutinize Uber’s financial independence amid aggressive investments in future transportation technologies, the focus has shifted to its cash flow generation. With a market value of around $154 billion, Uber’s free cash flow indicates a yield of approximately 6.5%, a level that many analysts consider indicative of a mature tech platform.

The $10 billion robotaxi initiative is not expected to result in immediate expenditure. Instead, this investment will be phased over several years and will be supported through a mix of equity investments, fleet financing, and commitments related to vehicles. Notably, management highlighted that strategic partners are contributing significantly more capital than the company itself, thereby easing Uber’s direct funding burden and maintaining flexibility for other corporate priorities.

    Strong Operating Leverage Emerges

Uber reported a 24% year-on-year increase in gross bookings, reaching $58.02 billion, while revenue rose 12% to $14.19 billion. More importantly, non-GAAP operating income surged 40% to $2.14 billion, showcasing expanding operational leverage across the platform.

For the quarter, free cash flow hit $2.79 billion, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. The company also benefited from a 3.5% decline in diluted weighted average shares, which allowed adjusted earnings per share to grow at a faster rate than net income.

Delivery services witnessed the fastest profit growth, with segment operating income jumping 38% to $1.06 billion. Meanwhile, mobility continued to be the largest source of earnings, with operating income increasing by 28% to $2.22 billion. This improvement in margins indicates that Uber is deriving greater profitability from each dollar of bookings, despite the impact of business-model adjustments on reported revenue growth.

    Analysts Adjust Price Targets

Despite the strong cash flow narrative, Wall Street displayed a more cautious stance regarding Uber’s long-term valuation. Following the earnings release, six out of seven major brokerages adjusted their price targets downwards, with the average target decreasing from $106.00 to $97.43—a decline of 8.1%.

Nonetheless, the overall sentiment remains positive, as all firms retained favorable recommendations. The new average target still suggests nearly 30% upside from Friday’s closing price. The adjustments reflect altered valuation assumptions rather than a decline in the underlying business, as analysts consider the timing and profitability of future autonomous operations.
