Gemini Faces Challenges as Q2 Losses Hit $107.7 Million

Gemini Space Station (GEMI) stock experienced a notable drop of 7% in after-hours trading, settling at $4.00 following the announcement of a staggering second-quarter net loss of $107.7 million. This decline came after a brief period of optimism, as the stock had previously closed the regular session up 3.12% at $4.30.

Despite the grim financial outlook, the net loss represented a slight improvement, narrowing 19% from $133.2 million reported in the same quarter last year. However, these results were sufficient to push the stock price closer to its all-time lows, hovering below the $4 mark.

On a more positive note, Gemini reported a revenue increase of 37%, reaching $45.5 million compared to $33.3 million in Q2 of 2025. The growth in revenue is promising but comes amidst significant operational challenges.

The credit card segment emerged as a key player in this revenue surge, with credit card revenue skyrocketing by 231% to $16.2 million. Additionally, staking revenue saw a 50% increase to $4 million, and over-the-counter (OTC) revenue grew from $0.6 million to $4.7 million, indicative of heightened institutional activity.

Overall, services revenue and interest income combined surged 117% to $26.0 million, shining as a bright spot amid an otherwise tumultuous quarter for the exchange.

    Fraud Charge Takes a Toll

However, the quarter was marred by transaction losses that soared to $20.1 million, a significant increase from $3.6 million. This spike was largely attributed to a $16.1 million provision for credit losses linked to identity fraud within its credit card portfolio, a situation that had come to light earlier in 2026.

This fraud charge overshadowed what would have otherwise been a strong cost-cutting narrative, with operating expenses decreasing by 15% to $122.4 million, driven by a 30% reduction in staff that took place in February, alongside a strategic retreat from international markets.

The operating loss for the quarter totaled $76.9 million, while the net loss per share was reported at $0.89, a marked improvement from $27.08 a year earlier. Assets on the platform have also seen a decline, dropping to $8.4 billion from $18.2 billion, largely influenced by a substantial decrease in Bitcoin’s value.

    Expanding Horizons

Gemini is not solely focused on crypto; the volume in prediction markets saw a remarkable 93% increase quarter over quarter, with cumulative contracts now exceeding 225 million. Revenue from these markets reached $500,000, a modest rise from $400,000 following their launch in December.

Earlier this month, the exchange activated its derivatives clearinghouse after receiving approval from regulatory bodies in April, and it launched commission-free U.S. stock trading in July, demonstrating its commitment to diversifying its offerings.

President Cameron Winklevoss remarked, “The Gemini platform has changed more in the past nine months than it did in the past decade.” Meanwhile, CEO Tyler Winklevoss acknowledged the ongoing challenges, stating, “While we still have work to do as a company, this quarter’s results reflect our ongoing efforts to reduce operating expenses while diversifying revenue.”

Interestingly, monthly transacting users grew by 11% year over year, hinting at a potential resilience among its user base.

For context, Gemini’s Q1 2026 results painted a different picture, with revenue hitting $50.3 million and a loss of $109 million, which had previously buoyed investor confidence.
