As the investment landscape evolves, new data from Binance Research illustrates a fascinating trend among Generation Z investors: a growing preference for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) coupled with a more conservative trading approach compared to their older counterparts.
In early August, ETFs represented a significant 25% of Gen Z’s equity trading volume on Binance, an increase from 21.9% in July and 18.5% in June. This shift signifies a notable pivot towards more diversified investment strategies, as younger traders seem to prioritize stability over speculative trading.
While Millennials averaged 17 monthly trades and Gen X reported 16.5, Gen Z led with a more measured approach, executing an average of just 13 trades per month in traditional finance perpetuals. This trend indicates a growing comfort with holding assets long-term, with 22% of Gen Z’s direct-equity accounts reporting they have never placed a sell order. For comparison, only 19% of Gen X and 9% of Baby Boomers shared this characteristic, while 30% of Millennials maintained buy-only accounts.
Among the most popular assets for Gen Z investors were tech giants such as Broadcom and Tesla, alongside the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF, highlighting their inclination towards established companies and income-generating investments.
Interestingly, Gen Z demonstrated minimal interest in leveraged and inverse ETFs, with 88.2% of their accounts remaining inactive in these products. This figure surpasses the inactivity rates of Millennials and Gen X, indicating a more cautious approach to riskier investment vehicles. The reasons behind this trend remain unclear, with possibilities including heightened risk awareness or limited eligibility for certain products.
The tokenized stock market has also been on the rise, with RWA.xyz reporting a 5% increase in distributed tokenized stock value, reaching $2.37 billion recently. Binance’s bStocks momentarily surpassed Kraken’s xStocks to become the second-largest tokenized stock issuer, peaking at $624 million, only to fall back to $535 million as xStocks reclaimed its lead with $603 million.
Overall, the broader market for tokenized stocks is flourishing, with DWF Labs noting a 92% increase in holders across five major platforms in July, totaling 752,000. While Robinhood reported the highest holder count at 328,000, it only managed $44 million in tokenized stock value. Conversely, Ondo Finance and xStocks commanded $857 million and $487 million, respectively.
In a landscape where traditional finance and cryptocurrency continue to converge, platforms like Crypto.com are expanding their offerings, now providing tokenized derivatives linked to 1,500 U.S. stocks and ETFs for users in the European Economic Area and other approved markets.
As Gen Z continues to carve out its identity in the financial world, their strategic choices reveal a generation that values long-term growth and diversified portfolios, positioning them distinctly against the more active trading habits of older generations.
