In a notable move within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, Founders Fund, backed by tech billionaire Peter Thiel, has spearheaded a $5 million acquisition of governance tokens from Anvil, a protocol designed to leverage digital asset collateral. This investment marks a strategic shift towards governance token ownership rather than traditional equity stakes.
The announcement, made on October 7, 2026, also saw participation from other prominent investors, including Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish, and Protoscale Capital. Although the exact terms and valuation of the investment remain undisclosed, the transaction underscores a growing interest in Anvil’s innovative approach to collateral management.
Interestingly, the ANVL tokens were obtained from Anvil’s existing treasury rather than a new issuance, reflecting the protocol’s commitment to maintaining a stable token supply. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, Anvil enables businesses to utilize digital assets as collateral for payment and credit commitments, replacing traditional banking processes with smart contracts.
As part of its ongoing development, Anvil Research Labs recently released a new software development kit (SDK), aimed at simplifying integration for businesses looking to harness the protocol without needing extensive blockchain coding expertise. This initiative is part of Anvil’s broader goal to enhance usability and attract a wider range of business applications.
Joey Krug, a partner at Founders Fund, emphasized the need for businesses to have confidence in their financial commitments. He noted that Anvil’s model allows these commitments to be backed by verifiable digital collateral, thereby mitigating risks associated with traditional finance.
Understanding Anvil’s Mechanism
At its core, Anvil operates as an on-chain equivalent of a letter of credit, traditionally issued by banks to guarantee payments under specific conditions. In Anvil’s framework, users can lock assets such as ETH or USDC into vaults, which serve as collateral for guarantees rather than loans, eliminating the need for interest or fees at the protocol level.
Recent governance decisions have expanded the scope of acceptable collateral types, now including EURC, cbBTC, sUSDe, WBTC, and wstETH, enhancing flexibility for users.
On the security front, Anvil has undergone audits by reputable firms like OpenZeppelin and Trail of Bits, and has conducted two bug bounty programs through Immunefi, ensuring a robust security posture.
Anvil’s Growth and Market Position
Launched in January 2025 as an open-source initiative by the Acronym Foundation, Anvil initially operated without external funding. However, its total value locked (TVL) has experienced significant fluctuations, currently hovering between $10 million and $14 million, a stark contrast to its peak of nearly $109 million in July 2025.
With a total supply of 100 billion ANVL tokens, approximately 80 to 88 billion are in circulation. About 60% of these tokens are allocated to partners and community members to promote ecosystem growth.
Founded by Tyler Spalding, also a co-founder of the crypto payment platform Flexa, Anvil aims to provide guarantees that circumvent some of the default risks prevalent in traditional finance. Several companies, including Consensus, Bitcoin.com, and Flexa, are already testing Anvil’s offerings, with Bullish exploring potential integrations within its operations.
Despite Anvil’s innovations, the broader DeFi lending market continues to overshadow it, holding approximately $56 billion in assets across platforms like Aave and Morpho, according to DefiLlama.
