The Tokenization Shift: Who Stands to Gain in the New Era of Assets?

In a recent report titled Breaking the Wall, Citrini Research has made waves in the financial landscape by asserting that blockchains have finally found their true purpose: tokenizing real-world assets. The document, spanning 79 pages, delves into the transformative potential of tokenization, suggesting it could redefine how assets are traded, owned, and managed.

Tokenization involves issuing an asset as a digital token on a blockchain, whether it’s a physical property, a bond, or shares of companies like Nvidia or Tesla. This innovative approach allows for the trading and collateralization of assets without the need to transfer the underlying ownership, thereby streamlining operations and enhancing liquidity.

Citrini underscores that tokenized assets can function more like software, enabling seamless transfers between applications and the ability to borrow against them without requiring extensive infrastructure from every platform. The firm notes that the rise of stablecoins, user-friendly wallets, and clearer regulatory frameworks are crucial in facilitating this shift.

    Wall Street’s Perspective

This week, major financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stanley discussed tokenization during their third-quarter earnings calls. While none provided specific revenue figures, their insights reflect a growing acknowledgment of the trend.

Goldman Sachs’ CEO David Solomon highlighted that tokenization could significantly enhance trading activity, similar to the impact of electronic trading in previous decades. He expressed optimism about its potential to attract new products and clients, although he cautioned that current activity remains limited.

The bank has invested in its own tokenization platform, GS DAP, and has begun testing a service in collaboration with the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, demonstrating its commitment to this emerging technology.

Wells Fargo has also taken steps in this direction, processing cross-border payments using tokenized deposits that can reach beneficiaries in under two minutes, although CFO Michael Santomassimo acknowledged that transaction volumes are still modest.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley CFO Sharon Yeshaya pointed out that the acceleration of asset transfers through tokenization does not eliminate the need for financial advice, emphasizing that clients will still require guidance in navigating this new landscape.

    Understanding Tokenized Stocks

In a recent analysis, Kraken Learn elaborated on the concept of tokenized stocks, such as Kraken’s xStocks, which are essentially tracker certificates backed 1:1 by actual shares held by a custodian. While token holders can track the share’s price, they do not possess the share itself, nor do they have voting rights. Instead, dividends are handled through a rebase mechanism that adjusts token balances rather than providing cash payouts.

It’s important to note that unlike traditional U.S. brokerage accounts, which offer SIPC protection up to $500,000, tokenized equity certificates lack uniform protections, with safeguards depending on the issuer’s policies and custody arrangements. Additionally, BlackRock’s tokenized money market fund, BUIDL, has gained traction, reaching nearly $3 billion in assets since its launch in March 2024.

    Who Stands to Profit?

As the landscape evolves, analysts present varying views on who will reap the benefits of this tokenization trend. Arthur Hayes of Maelstrom raised concerns about the actual profitability of merely digitizing existing securities, questioning where the real value lies for investors.

Conversely, Zach Pandl of Grayscale views ownership of the underlying networks—such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Solana—as the most direct investment opportunity. Jeff Dorman of Arca suggested that while tokenization may become a standardized process, greater returns will likely be realized as these assets begin trading or serving as collateral.

Finally, Christian Magoon of Amplify ETFs posited that infrastructure providers could emerge as essential players, potentially becoming “toll booths on the blockchain toll roads.” However, he cautioned that the market is still in its infancy, with tokenized assets representing a fraction of global markets, as Bitcoin trades around $81,671 and Ether at approximately $2,409.
