Nebius Stock Plummets Despite Major Financing Deal Amid AI Expansion Concerns

Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS) faced a turbulent week as its stock plummeted nearly 19%, even after the announcement of a $775 million GPU-backed financing facility. This development, instead of instilling confidence among investors, has heightened concerns about the substantial capital required for the company’s ambitious artificial intelligence infrastructure plans.

The downturn in Nebius’ stock coincided with a broader sell-off in the AI infrastructure and cloud computing sectors, suggesting that investor enthusiasm has shifted towards a more cautious approach. Nebius is actively working to expand its AI computing capacity, yet this latest financing accounts for only a fraction of its extensive $20 billion to $25 billion capital expenditure plan slated for 2026.

    Funding Covers Limited Expansion

The newly secured financing is underpinned by deployed graphics processing units (GPUs) and revenue from existing customer contracts. As the company’s first senior secured loan, it features a floating interest rate tied to one-month SOFR plus a 250-basis-point margin, maturing in October 2030.

Despite the flexibility this financing provides, it remains a small part of Nebius’ larger investment strategy. The firm has projected an ambitious $20 billion to $25 billion investment in AI infrastructure within the year, indicating that this recent loan only finances a limited aspect of its overall expansion efforts.

Management has asserted that the loan, along with contracted customer cash flows, adequately supports the infrastructure deployment linked to this financing. Nevertheless, investors are left pondering how Nebius plans to fund the remainder of its massive buildout without imposing significant strain on its shareholders or balance sheet.

    Asset-Backed Strategy Draws Attention

In contrast to traditional corporate borrowing, Nebius structured this financing around its operating assets, which are already generating revenue. The GPUs serving its customers effectively act as collateral, allowing the company to unlock capital while maintaining operational continuity.

This financing approach mirrors strategies employed by other AI infrastructure providers, including CoreWeave, which recently secured a larger GPU-backed facility. However, the differences in size, maturity, and credit profile between the two transactions are noteworthy.

For Nebius, the pivotal question extends beyond securing this one financing deal; it centers on whether similar facilities can be replicated as more AI clusters enter the market.

Executives remain optimistic regarding this strategy. Chief Operating Officer Ophir Nave emphasized that the financing represents a significant milestone in the company’s long-term roadmap, noting that lender interest exceeded the amount raised.

    Large Contracts Support Growth

Nebius has reiterated that customer demand remains robust, with over $40 billion in additional contracted revenue, counting major tech players such as Microsoft and Meta Platforms among its clientele.

In addition to computing infrastructure, Nebius has unveiled a separate $1.7 billion energy initiative supported by Industrial Development Funding and Oaktree. This project will fund Bloom Energy fuel cell deployments aimed at powering future AI infrastructure. While this investment complements Nebius’ broader ecosystem, it is defined as project financing rather than direct corporate funding.

Together with the GPU-backed facility, recent announcements have brought the total funding associated with Nebius’ infrastructure to approximately $2.5 billion, although only $775 million represents direct borrowing by the company.
