Elon Musk’s ambition for X to become an “everything app” akin to China’s WeChat has taken a significant leap forward with the broader rollout of X Money. This new banking service, integrated directly into the X app, allows users to engage in various financial activities without ever leaving the platform.
X Money provides a suite of features including deposits, peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, wire transfers, and check mailing. Initially available only to a select group of Premium and Premium+ subscribers since late June, the service is now accessible to a wider audience.
Deposits made through X Money are held at Cross River Bank, a New Jersey-based fintech lender known for its innovative banking solutions, and are FDIC-insured up to $250,000. This marks the debut of the first government-insured banking platform embedded within a social network in the U.S., according to Cross River.
Cross River will supply the necessary banking infrastructure for X Money, including payment processing, interest-bearing accounts, and Visa debit cards. The service aims to redefine how users engage with their finances by simplifying transactions through a familiar social media interface.
A Competitive Edge with Attractive Returns
One of the most striking features of X Money is its competitive annual percentage yield (APY) of up to 6% on deposits—a rate significantly higher than the 4% to 5% typically offered by leading high-yield savings accounts in the U.S., and substantially better than the near-zero rates at many established banks.
Premium+ subscribers will automatically benefit from this top rate, while Premium users must meet certain direct deposit criteria to qualify. This aggressive interest offering has already drawn scrutiny from lawmakers; in an April letter, Senator Elizabeth Warren raised concerns about how X Money plans to sustain such high yields, referencing past regulatory actions against Cross River regarding its lending practices.
The Journey to Launch
Musk first articulated his vision for X as an “everything app” in 2022 following his acquisition of Twitter. Limited beta testing for X Money began in May 2025, with Musk emphasizing the importance of careful management of user savings. A broader external beta rolled out in March 2026.
Since then, X has successfully acquired money transmitter licenses across more than 40 U.S. states and has registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to facilitate peer-to-peer payments, positioning itself as a strong contender against established players like PayPal’s Venmo, Block’s Cash App, and SoFi.
Despite its ambitious features, the initial launch announcement for X Money did not mention any support for cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, even though Cross River provides crypto infrastructure for other fintech clients. This omission raises questions about the platform’s future integration of digital assets.
With millions of existing users on X, the potential for rapid adoption of X Money is high. However, the transition from a social media platform to an active banking service will depend on user engagement and trust. Cross River has indicated that the launch of X Money is just the beginning of a broader financial services expansion, with plans to develop additional offerings over time.
