Netflix Faces Advertising Margin Concerns Amid $500M Walking Dead Deal

In a notable development for the streaming giant, Netflix shares dipped on Thursday, despite a broader market rally. The decline came on the heels of the company unveiling a substantial $500 million licensing agreement with AMC for the iconic Walking Dead franchise, reigniting discussions about the potential impact of expanding content commitments on Netflix’s advertising business.

Closing the day down 0.6% at $73.17, Netflix’s performance lagged behind a strong market session, where the S&P 500 gained 1.7%. While the immediate financial implications of the Walking Dead deal seem relatively minor against Netflix’s expansive content budget, investors are keenly focused on the signals this agreement sends regarding the company’s evolving strategy as it increasingly relies on advertising to drive growth.

This new arrangement provides Netflix access to seven series from the Walking Dead universe, totaling 371 episodes, under a five-year global licensing framework. However, AMC retains the streaming rights, rendering the deal co-exclusive rather than fully exclusive. The reported valuation of the agreement stands at approximately $500 million for the duration of the contract.

    Large Franchise, Limited Ownership

Rather than opting for a traditional acquisition of permanent rights or a studio purchase, Netflix has essentially opted to rent access to this well-established franchise. Analysts suggest that this strategy enables the company to bolster its library with recognizable content while avoiding the significant capital outlays associated with outright ownership.

Current estimates indicate that Netflix will make annual cash payments of about $100 million from 2027 through 2030, with roughly $25 million due in 2026. Although these figures represent only a fraction of Netflix’s planned film and television spending, the more pressing concern for investors lies in the temporary nature of these rights. After the five-year term, the content reverts to AMC, necessitating that Netflix continually justifies the expense through viewer engagement, retention, or advertising performance.

    Advertising Economics Under Scrutiny

While advertising currently accounts for a relatively small portion of Netflix’s total revenue, its significance is rapidly increasing in the company’s growth narrative. Projections indicate that ad revenue could reach approximately $3 billion by 2026, nearly doubling the previous year’s figures.

Given that advertising offers appealing incremental economics, investors are closely monitoring any factors that could influence margins. The anticipated annual payment for the Walking Dead package would represent roughly 3.3% of projected advertising revenue in 2026. Although this ratio is not alarming by itself, it underscores a shift in how library content is evaluated within the company. In the early streaming years, subscriber growth was pursued at virtually any cost.

    Growth Remains Solid but Slower

Despite the current challenges, Netflix’s core business continues to expand, albeit at a decelerating rate. Revenue surged from $11.08 billion in Q2 2025 to $12.56 billion in Q2 2026, while diluted earnings per share rose from $0.72 to $0.80.

For the upcoming third quarter, management anticipates revenue growth of 11.7%, a decline from 13.4% in the previous quarter. Operating margins are expected to hover around 33%. This combination of slowing growth and relatively stable margins elucidates why investors are becoming more selective regarding new content commitments.

Netflix still enjoys a valuation premium compared to traditional media peers, which translates to a narrower margin for error if audience engagement or advertising trends falter. The company’s viewing data also suggests the crucial role of content efficiency in its long-term strategy.
