Nebius Stock Surges 125% Despite Burry’s Short Position: A Closer Look

The stock of Nebius Group (NBIS) has had a rollercoaster year, culminating in a staggering 125% increase in value despite facing significant challenges in July. This AI cloud infrastructure company saw its stock plummet by 31.1% during that month, largely driven by a 13.29% single-day drop following the revelation that prominent hedge fund manager Michael Burry had taken a short position against it.

As of now, NBIS trades at approximately $187.97, with a market capitalization hovering around $47 billion. Its 52-week range has been between $62.01 and $299.86, highlighting the volatility that has characterized its performance.

Despite the recent setbacks, the stock’s year-to-date growth speaks volumes about investor confidence in Nebius’ long-term potential. However, Burry’s disclosure has reignited scrutiny regarding the company’s ambitious data center expansion plans and whether its current valuation can be justified.

Analysts at Simply Wall St suggest that the stock may currently be undervalued, estimating a fair price of $245.43, which would imply a 22.6% upside from current levels. This optimistic view hinges on Nebius’ ability to maintain its hyper-growth trajectory in the burgeoning AI compute infrastructure sector.

    Impressive Revenue Growth

One of the most compelling factors in Nebius’ favor is its explosive revenue growth. The company’s Q1 revenue skyrocketed from approximately $50 million last year to an impressive $400 million this year. Such rapid expansion is difficult to overlook, especially as the demand for AI capabilities continues to surge.

Nebius has been scaling its contracted power capacity, with projections having increased from a minimum of 1 GW to over 4 GW since last August. The company has secured up to 1.2 GW of power and land for a new AI factory in Pennsylvania, positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for AI services.

However, growth comes at a cost. Nebius reported spending about $2.5 billion in Q1 alone, primarily on GPUs and related hardware. Rising co-location costs, operating lease expenses, and recruitment have all emerged as significant cost drivers that could affect profitability.

    Capital Raise Fuels Expansion Plans

In a strategic move to further bolster its growth, Nebius raised $775 million in debt financing in mid-July, adding to the impressive $6.3 billion it raised in Q1. This initial capital raise included a substantial $2 billion equity investment from a major technology firm, alongside $4.3 billion from convertible securities.

However, such aggressive capital deployment raises a pertinent question: can Nebius sustain its rapid revenue growth in tandem with its escalating spending? The stock currently trades at about 14 times its forward sales, indicating that its valuation is not particularly cheap. Any signs of a slowdown in customer commitments to cloud capacity could put additional pressure on the stock price.

As investors brace for Nebius’ upcoming Q2 earnings report on August 12, all eyes will be on updates regarding compute capacity growth, customer pipeline developments, and whether the cost pressures seen in Q1 have begun to ease. The outcome of this report could serve as a critical indicator of the company’s ability to maintain its growth trajectory in a competitive landscape.
