Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) experienced a notable surge on Friday, with shares climbing approximately 10% as investors reacted to the company’s impressive second-quarter earnings announced on August 3rd.
The software company reported a staggering revenue of $1.94 billion for Q2, marking a remarkable 92.8% increase year-over-year and surpassing Wall Street’s expectation of $1.81 billion. Furthermore, earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.41, exceeding the estimated $0.34 by seven cents, affirming the company’s strong financial performance.
This stock rally was partially attributed to short covering, as bearish investors faced significant losses following the earnings release. Coupled with a broader strength seen in the tech sector, the positive momentum for Palantir stock continued to build.
In light of these results, Bank of America has reiterated its Buy rating on Palantir, significantly raising its price target to $255. This new target suggests an upside potential of around 50% from the stock’s recent trading levels, reflecting the bank’s confidence in Palantir’s business model.
Bank of America highlighted key factors underpinning Palantir’s competitive advantage, including its innovative AI strategy, growth in its commercial sector, and established government contracts. These elements are expected to play a crucial role in the company’s future trajectory.
Sovereign AI and Commercial Expansion
The bank also pointed to Palantir’s increasing focus on sovereign AI, where organizations seek to implement artificial intelligence while maintaining control over sensitive data and workflows. This trend is expected to enhance Palantir’s market position as more entities prioritize data security.
On the commercial front, the report noted a rise in larger customer contracts and increased spending from existing clients, prompting the bank to revise its long-term earnings forecasts upwards. Northland Securities has also adjusted its forecasts for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, increasing its EPS estimates to $1.24 and $1.53 respectively, suggesting that the company’s earnings growth is sustainable.
Adding to the bullish sentiment, a less-than-expected jobs report for July contributed to the stock’s rally, as soft job data diminished the likelihood of an immediate interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, which typically supports high-growth software valuations.
Valuation Concerns and Insider Activity
However, investors should be mindful of potential risks associated with Palantir stock. Currently trading at a P/E ratio of 147, the stock requires continued robust growth to justify its valuation. Additionally, insider selling has raised eyebrows, with over 1.1 million shares valued at approximately $150.7 million sold in the past 90 days, primarily to cover tax obligations from vested equity awards.
Notably, Everhart Financial Group reduced its stake by 17.5% in Q2, while ARK Invest also trimmed its position after the recent rally. In contrast, Michael Burry maintains a bearish stance on the stock.
Presently, analyst ratings for PLTR include two Strong Buys, 20 Buys, 11 Holds, and three Sells, with a consensus average price target set at $190.73. Mizuho has raised its target from $185 to $215, while Oppenheimer has downgraded its rating from outperform to market perform.
