The Rise of AI Agents: The New Wave of Crypto Users

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, we’re witnessing a remarkable shift in the landscape of cryptocurrency. AI agents, sophisticated software programs capable of executing tasks on behalf of users, are now making payments autonomously. No longer reliant on human input, these digital entities are purchasing data, computing power, and access to online tools with impressive efficiency.

Coinbase has developed an innovative payment protocol named x402 to facilitate this new wave of transactions. Designed to operate much like a paywall for digital services, the x402 protocol allows an AI agent to request a service, receive a price quote, make a payment, and obtain the desired result—all without the cumbersome processes of account creation or card detail entry.

Since its inception, the x402 protocol has processed over 165 million payments, amounting to approximately $50 million in volume, with a staggering 99% of these transactions conducted using USDC, a widely used dollar-pegged stablecoin. Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s head of AI product, highlights that the average transaction value stands around 30 cents, primarily benefiting APIs that facilitate data exchange and service requests.

    Stablecoins Leading the Charge

Stablecoins are emerging as the preferred currency for AI agents, and for good reason. Operating around the clock and capable of facilitating global transactions, stablecoins eliminate the costly fees associated with traditional credit card payments, which can range from 2% to 4%. This is especially crucial when dealing with low-value transactions, where such fees can significantly erode profit margins.

Cloudflare, for instance, is working on a wallet system specifically designed for AI agents. Their upcoming product aims to function like a corporate card, enabling operators to set spending limits and approved sellers before any transaction takes place. Meanwhile, Circle is experimenting with rapid USDC payments that can be confirmed quickly, with transactions later recorded on the blockchain in batches. Additionally, MoonPay has launched PayBox, a solution that connects to AI assistants, allowing agents to utilize both cards and cryptocurrencies depending on the merchant’s preferences.

    Card Networks Are Adapting

Despite the rise of AI agents, traditional card networks are not standing still. Mastercard is currently testing a unique system dubbed Agent Pay for Machines, which utilizes digital vouchers. In this setup, the owner of an AI agent defines the parameters of what the software can purchase and the spending limits. Sellers then verify these conditions, deliver the requested service, and claim payment at a later time.

Not to be outdone, Visa and DBS Bank recently conducted a trial where an AI agent successfully purchased food and drinks using a credit card. They are now exploring the potential for online shopping and travel bookings as the next logical steps in this evolving landscape.

    A Market in Its Infancy

While the advancements in AI transactions are compelling, it’s important to recognize that this market is still in its nascent stages. Murr compares the current state of AI payment systems to the early days of file-sharing services like Napster and LimeWire—promising technology, yet lacking in regulatory clarity and scalability.

In July, the x402 protocol processed around $24 million over 30 days, a figure that pales in comparison to the volume Visa can manage in mere minutes. Furthermore, many of Coinbase’s transaction figures may be reflective of ongoing testing rather than genuine commerce, indicating that the full potential of AI payments has yet to be realized.

One significant hurdle remains: facilitating the initial funding of an AI agent’s wallet. Coinbase is actively working to streamline this process, aiming to enable agents to establish their own wallets autonomously when directed to do so.

As we move forward, the intersection of AI and cryptocurrency is poised to reshape our understanding of digital transactions, paving the way for a future where AI agents become integral players in the crypto economy.
