Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 Amid ETF Inflows and Economic Shifts

Bitcoin has made a remarkable comeback, soaring past the $80,000 threshold on Monday for the first time since May 15, 2026. This upward momentum marks a significant recovery, gaining approximately 38% from its late-June and early-July lows, where it dipped below $58,000.

The cryptocurrency’s ascent coincided with the opening of Wall Street, where BTC/USD climbed nearly 3% before experiencing a slight pullback after the European market closed. The resurgence of Bitcoin can largely be attributed to evolving U.S. Treasury policies, which have doubled their planned buybacks of long-dated government bonds through early November. This strategy, funded with short-term debt, has provided a much-needed boost to risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

Falling Treasury yields have further eased financial conditions, creating a favorable environment for Bitcoin and other high-risk assets. This market shift has ignited renewed interest in spot Bitcoin ETFs, which recorded a significant inflow of approximately $1.9 billion last week—the highest since October 2025. This surge in institutional investment signals a strong return of traditional investors to the Bitcoin market.

    Market Reactions and Liquidations

The breach of the $80,000 mark triggered a wave of short liquidations, with data revealing over $220 million in liquidations within 24 hours surrounding this breakthrough. Analysts have identified a cluster of bid liquidity near $76,700, which may serve as a potential support level should prices retreat.

As of August, Bitcoin has delivered a stellar performance, showcasing a 25% gain month-to-date—its best August performance since 2017. This upward trend has analysts closely monitoring Bitcoin’s movement and the broader market implications.

    Analyst Insights

Prominent analyst Ali Charts has pointed out that Bitcoin has reclaimed its 1,130-day simple moving average, a level historically associated with the end of bear markets across various market cycles. After falling below this key indicator on June 1, 2026, Bitcoin managed to reclaim it on August 20, following a breakout above $74,000. If historical patterns hold true, this could signify that the market bottom has already been reached.

Trader and analyst Rekt Capital noted that Bitcoin has achieved its first weekly close above the 50-week exponential moving average since November 2025, currently positioned at $77,251. “If this is a Bear Market Relief Rally, then Bitcoin could pull back as early as this week or at least over the next few weeks. Now it’s all about Bitcoin proving sustained strength,” Rekt Capital remarked.

In light of Bitcoin’s past bear market, where it saw two weekly closes above the 50-week EMA before a drop to cycle lows, market participants remain cautious. All attention now shifts to the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, the PCE index, set to be released this week. The outcome of this data will likely have significant implications for the future trajectory of Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market.
