Ripple is making strategic moves to tap into the corporate treasury sector, eyeing a colossal $13 trillion in annual transactions as it aims to expand its RLUSD stablecoin. The blockchain giant has identified corporate treasurers as a key growth driver, with the potential to revolutionize traditional finance through its innovative solutions.
Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, highlighted that the firm’s corporate treasury clients already manage around $13 trillion in transactions annually, a figure that underscores the immense opportunity available for RLUSD. This segment of the market has remained largely untapped by blockchain technology, but Ripple intends to change that.
RLUSD, which launched nearly two years ago, has seen impressive growth, with its circulating supply skyrocketing to $2.4 billion, marking a more than 50% increase over just the past month. Daily activity related to RLUSD has also tripled since the beginning of the year, now reaching approximately $750 million each day. Such momentum places Ripple’s stablecoin on a path toward greater significance in the cryptocurrency landscape, despite trailing behind established players like Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC.
RLUSD’s Rising Profile
The remarkable surge in RLUSD’s supply and daily transactions reflects Ripple’s commitment to integrating the stablecoin into various financial operations. The company is prioritizing practical use cases over mere market capitalization, focusing on payments and capital markets where RLUSD is already gaining traction.
In the payments sector, Ripple is positioning RLUSD as the primary stablecoin, facilitating seamless transactions. The token is also being utilized in capital markets for settlements, as collateral, and in collaborations with major financial institutions like Franklin Templeton and DBS for tokenized money market funds and lending services.
Expanding Horizons: Europe and New Blockchain Networks
Looking ahead, Ripple plans to introduce RLUSD to the European market through a dual-issuance framework that complies with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA). With regulatory approval already secured in Luxembourg, Ripple is poised to broaden its offerings in Europe, which could encompass stablecoins, payments, custody, and trading.
Despite the focus on dollar-backed stablecoins, McDonald noted that there remains a strong demand for RLUSD, particularly as corporate treasurers look for efficient solutions. The stablecoin landscape continues to evolve, now boasting over $300 billion in circulation, as banks and payment firms increasingly leverage blockchain technology.
Additionally, RLUSD is branching out from its origins on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. Ripple has expanded its reach to include networks such as Base, Ink, Optimism, and Unichain, aligning its strategy with market demand rather than seeking to dominate every blockchain.
McDonald remarked, “We want to be where demand is. We’re not chasing retail meme coin chains.” This statement reflects Ripple’s focused approach toward meaningful partnerships and applications that resonate with corporate clients.
As Ripple navigates this competitive landscape, the potential for RLUSD to carve out a significant niche in the corporate treasury market is becoming increasingly evident, paving the way for a future where blockchain technology seamlessly integrates with traditional financial practices.
