UniCredit, one of Europe’s largest banks with approximately $34 billion in assets under management and over 20 million customers, is taking significant steps towards integrating crypto into its service offerings. The bank is currently exploring opportunities in crypto custody and brokerage services, as it seeks a technology provider to manage digital assets and facilitate client transactions.
Though no final decisions have been made, UniCredit is considering a range of areas including custody solutions, brokerage, tokenized investment products, and stablecoin applications. The move signals a growing trend among traditional financial institutions as they adapt to the evolving landscape of digital finance.
UniCredit’s Existing Crypto Steps
UniCredit has already ventured into the crypto space with notable products. In July 2025, the bank launched a five-year Bitcoin-linked certificate tied to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, designed for professional clients in Italy. This certificate offers full capital protection with an 85% return cap.
Additionally, in December 2025, UniCredit structured Italy’s first tokenized minibond, valued at 5 million euros, on a public blockchain, specifically recorded on Polygon for E4 Computer Engineering. These initiatives underscore UniCredit’s commitment to innovation in financial products.
Furthermore, the bank is part of the Qivalis consortium—a collaboration of 37 European banks aiming to introduce a MiCA-compliant euro stablecoin on Ethereum in the latter half of 2026. This stablecoin will be backed one-for-one by euro deposits, aligning with the EU’s recent regulatory framework for crypto assets.
As the crypto regulatory landscape evolves, any services offered by UniCredit will need to comply with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, which mandates licensing for providers operating in the European Economic Area.
Other major banks are also making strides in this sector. Deutsche Bank has partnered with the Swiss firm Taurus for digital asset custody, while BBVA has begun offering Bitcoin trading to private clients in Switzerland. Israel’s Bank Leumi is planning to collaborate with Galaxy to manage trading and custody for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana by 2027.
In a recent move, UniCredit acquired a minority stake in VC Trade, a Frankfurt-based platform that digitizes bond and loan transactions, which has processed over 90 billion euros across more than 600 deals.
Circle Arc Goes Live as BRICS Talks Stall
As banks like UniCredit develop their crypto infrastructure, Circle is preparing to launch its Arc Layer-1 blockchain on September 16. This new blockchain will utilize USDC as its native gas token, boasting sub-second transaction finality, a significant advancement in the realm of digital currencies.
This launch coincides with the U.S. Senate’s upcoming procedural vote on the CLARITY Act, scheduled for September 15. Circle has affirmed that Arc will go live regardless of the legislative outcome, emphasizing its commitment to innovation.
Currently, stablecoins account for approximately $308 billion in total supply, with a staggering $7.5 trillion in settlement volume recorded as of March this year. While banks are advancing in the crypto space, discussions at the recent BRICS Summit in New Delhi highlighted the potential for linking central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) among member nations. However, the initiative is still in the discussion phase, with India advocating for a bilateral CBDC linkage model rather than a common BRICS currency.
The New Delhi Declaration, adopted on September 12, emphasizes CBDC interoperability, though RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed that the initiative is still undergoing feasibility studies.
With Circle Arc set to launch soon and UniCredit paving the way for crypto custody solutions, the landscape of digital finance is rapidly evolving, promising exciting developments in the near future.
