On October 21, MoonPay, a prominent player in the crypto payment sector, announced its plans to collaborate with South Korea’s leading crypto exchange operator, Dunamu. The companies will explore the integration of stablecoin payments with a focus on enhancing international transfers and corporate treasury services.
This partnership aims to leverage MoonPay’s extensive global payment network alongside Dunamu’s expertise in blockchain technology, particularly through its operation of Upbit, South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. Together, they will investigate how stablecoins can facilitate seamless cross-border transactions.
Innovating Cross-Border Payments
In light of recent developments in blockchain payment systems, this collaboration comes on the heels of Mastercard’s recent launch of a platform designed to link stablecoins with business payments, enabling overseas transfers and bank payouts. Despite the momentum, MoonPay and Dunamu have yet to specify which stablecoins will be supported in this proposed service.
Exploring Corporate Finance Solutions
Both companies will evaluate potential applications of digital assets within corporate financial operations, including treasury management and corporate transfers. This exploratory phase will analyze how blockchain systems can integrate with established financial networks to provide innovative solutions for businesses.
However, it’s important to note that this agreement is still in the preliminary stages. Detailed investment figures, customer commitments, or a timeline for a commercial launch have not been disclosed. The focus remains on assessing the technical requirements and market demand before proceeding with specific product offerings.
Connecting GIWA with Global Markets
Dunamu has ambitious plans to enhance the international reach of GIWA, its Ethereum Layer 2 network. As the Ethereum ecosystem sees increasing institutional payment activity, such as JPMorgan’s recent expansion of its deposit token to Ethereum, Dunamu aims to draw more global users and partners to GIWA. Under this partnership, MoonPay will play a pivotal role in connecting GIWA-based products with overseas markets.
Bugeon Lee, MoonPay’s head for the Asia-Pacific region, emphasized the necessity for stablecoin systems to cater to business needs beyond mere money transfers. The collaboration will delve into how their networks can interconnect effectively.
South Korean Regulatory Landscape for Stablecoins
Dunamu’s strategic initiatives are being shaped in the context of South Korea’s evolving regulatory framework for digital assets. The country is preparing to implement its Digital Asset Basic Act, which includes regulations for won-backed stablecoins. In a similar vein, plans have also surfaced for a won-pegged token aimed at asset settlement, pending regulatory approval.
Additionally, Dunamu is in the process of pursuing a stock-swap merger with Naver Financial, aiming to create a new joint venture focused on stablecoin and payment services. Notably, Hana Bank recently acquired a 6.55% stake in Dunamu for approximately 1 trillion won, further solidifying the company’s position in the crypto landscape.
