Redesigning Exchange Tokens: Keeping Users Engaged in a Competitive Landscape

The airdrop cycles of 2024 and 2025 have established a well-known pattern in the crypto market: a protocol announces a points program, leading to a surge in volume and wallet activity, followed by a rapid decline once the initial excitement wears off. This model, while effective in its time, failed to foster lasting engagement, as users often moved on to the next enticing opportunity.

As the landscape of decentralized exchanges (DEXs) evolves, particularly in the realm of perpetual trading, a shift is necessary. The on-chain perpetual volume has grown from approximately 2% of the total market in January 2024 to over 10% by early 2026, with monthly trading volumes exceeding $1 trillion. This significant growth indicates that the focus has shifted from merely attracting users to retaining them.

To adapt to this evolving market, exchange tokens are being redesigned with three key shifts in mind.

Shift One: Governance Weight You Can’t Buy

The first major change involves separating the tradable asset from the governance asset. Traditionally, a single token served both purposes, allowing voting power to be easily acquired, often by those with no genuine stake in the protocol. This vulnerability has resulted in governance attacks.

New models propose a non-transferable staking derivative, where users stake their liquid tokens to receive a governance token that cannot be sold or borrowed. This ensures that only those who are committed to the protocol can influence its governance decisions, thereby making governance capture more challenging.

For instance, EVEDEX’s design for the $EVE token exemplifies this approach. Users can stake EVE to receive stEVE, a non-transferable token that carries voting rights within the EVEDEX DAO.

Shift Two: Exit Costs that Decay Rather Than Cliff

The second shift centers on how unstaking processes are structured. Historically, lockup periods have operated on a binary system: funds are either locked or unlocked. This creates a predictable unlock-cliff dynamic, where a significant amount of tokens becomes liquid at once, impacting market prices.

In contrast, the $EVE design allows for a continuous unstaking process, where the exit is progressively priced over a year. Holders can withdraw their unlocked portion at any time, but if they exit early, they incur a penalty that decreases over time. This system encourages users to remain engaged rather than making abrupt exits.

Shift Three: Rewards Indexed to Revenue, Not Emissions

The third significant change involves how rewards are calculated. Traditional emissions-based staking rewards often lead to a cycle of dilution, where newly issued tokens reduce the value for existing holders.

In contrast, EVEDEX explicitly ties staking rewards to the protocol’s revenue, aligning them with actual business performance rather than arbitrary emissions. This approach may yield a lower but more stable return, fostering a healthier ecosystem where rewards are a direct reflection of the protocol’s success.

    Unresolved Challenges

Despite these advancements, some critical issues remain unaddressed. The allocation of tokens still favors insiders, with only 6% of the total supply designated for retroactive community rewards, a statistic that raises concerns about equitable distribution.

Moreover, the timing of the $EVE token generation event is still uncertain, expected to occur between six to eighteen months post-mainnet launch. This variability could significantly impact market conditions and token performance.

Nevertheless, the direction of these redesigns signals a commitment to fostering user retention rather than merely attracting initial interest. As these new mechanisms are put to the test, the crypto community will be watching closely to see if they can withstand the pressures of market fluctuations.
