The US stock market saw a positive shift on Monday, with major indices closing higher thanks to a rally in semiconductor stocks and renewed interest in artificial intelligence following Anthropic’s recent IPO filing.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 146.42 points, or 0.28%, finishing the day at 52,361.58. Likewise, the S&P 500 experienced a gain of 0.7%, closing at 7,676.77, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.82% to end at 26,169.38. This upward momentum comes after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq faced two consecutive weeks of losses.
Anthropic’s Impressive IPO Filing
In a significant development, Anthropic disclosed revenues of $16.29 billion for the six-month period ending June, marking a staggering 1,304% increase from $1.16 billion during the same timeframe last year. The AI firm, known for its Claude AI system, plans to list on the Nasdaq, and investor enthusiasm is palpable as many hope this IPO will invigorate the struggling tech sector.
Market analysts are optimistic. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, noted that this news is a much-needed boost for the market, anticipating strong demand as investors have been awaiting this IPO for quite some time.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF surged by nearly 3%, with major players like Nvidia rising by 2.4%, Micron by 3%, Broadcom by 2.3%, and Advanced Micro Devices by 2.8%. Despite these gains, the semiconductor sector remains in a bear market, down approximately 25% from its peak and 13% for the month.
Other positive headlines in the AI space also contributed to the bullish sentiment. Meta Platforms announced plans to invest $95 billion into AI initiatives, while Elon Musk revealed that SpaceX secured a $40 billion debt deal aimed at financing AI chip production.
Stocks in the Neocloud sector also experienced gains, with CoreWeave climbing nearly 2% and Iren up 2.1%, despite Musk’s caution about the future of over 200 companies in the market.
Additionally, falling oil prices offered further relief, with Brent futures dropping 0.8% to $115.81 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate sliding 1.7% to $101.57. These movements follow reports suggesting potential military actions in the Middle East, specifically regarding US and Israeli strategies concerning Iran.

The Federal Reserve is also in focus as it commences a two-day meeting on Tuesday. Current Fed funds futures indicate a 90% probability that interest rates will remain unchanged at 3.75% to 4%. As the week progresses, Nasdaq-100 futures dipped 0.3%, and S&P 500 futures trended lower, reflecting cautious investor sentiment ahead of these significant announcements.
