The semiconductor industry is buzzing with excitement as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reports remarkable third-quarter results and anticipates significant price hikes in advanced chip packaging. According to recent information, TSMC, listed under the ticker TSM, recorded a staggering NT$1.494 trillion ($46.72 billion) in revenue for Q3, marking a 41.2% increase year-over-year.
While TSMC’s stock saw a minor decline of 0.39% on Tuesday, its local Taiwan listing (2330) experienced a rise of 0.63%. This fluctuation follows reports from the Commercial Times suggesting that TSMC is poised to raise prices for its chip-on-wafer-on-substrate (CoWoS) packaging services by as much as 20%. This advanced packaging is crucial for AI processors that are increasingly in demand.
The surge in AI applications is extending beyond graphics processing units (GPUs) to encompass server CPUs and custom application-specific integrated circuits, thereby tightening the already limited packaging capacity. As demand escalates, longer testing times for AI chips are adding pressure on packaging and testing resources, resulting in an increase in chip queue times.
Moreover, challenges in equipment delivery have compounded the issue, with waits extending to six to eight months, up from a previous timeline of three to six months. Suppliers are struggling to keep pace with the rapid escalation in demand.
Capacity Expansion and Strategic Partnerships
Looking ahead, analysts predict that TSMC’s monthly CoWoS capacity will exceed 130,000 wafers by 2026, potentially reaching 200,000 by 2027. This growth is vital as CoWoS technology combines AI processors with high-bandwidth memory, making it indispensable for high-demand clients such as Nvidia and Apple.
In a strategic move, GlobalFoundries announced a manufacturing agreement with TSMC to produce silicon interposers in the U.S., aimed at bolstering the supply chain for CoWoS technology. GlobalFoundries executive Ed Kaste emphasized the importance of advanced packaging in meeting the performance demands of next-gen AI systems and underscored the benefits of U.S.-based production for reliability.
Impressive Q3 Financials and Future Outlook
TSMC’s robust financial performance is underscored by a net income surge of 68.7%, totaling NT$763.06 billion ($23.59 billion). The company’s strong growth trajectory was driven largely by advanced chips, which accounted for a significant portion of wafer revenue. Chips manufactured using 7nm and more advanced technologies represented 79% of that revenue, a slight increase from the previous quarter.
Looking to Q4, TSMC anticipates revenue in the range of $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion. The market sentiment remains positive, with TipRanks reflecting a Strong Buy consensus on TSM, backed by nine Buy ratings and just one Sell over the past three months. Current price targets suggest substantial upside potential, with estimates averaging around $534.60, indicating a 26% increase, while some forecasts even suggest a target of $883, translating to a 95% upside.
As TSMC navigates this period of unprecedented demand and pricing adjustments, the semiconductor giant is positioning itself for continued growth amid an evolving technology landscape.
