Google Set to Revolutionize Crypto Custody with New Security System by 2027

In an ambitious move to enhance digital asset security, Google has previewed a groundbreaking crypto custody system that employs multi-party computation (MPC). The company’s new offering is designed specifically for banks and financial institutions, with commercial availability targeted for early 2027.

The innovative service, which has been showcased at Google’s inaugural digital assets symposium in New York on October 28, is currently undergoing private testing with several major financial institutions. This advanced system divides control of private keys into multiple segments, each stored in distinct computing environments. As a result, no single machine ever holds the complete key, significantly reducing the risk of breaches.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is already utilizing this technology to secure its own digital assets on prominent blockchains like Ethereum and Solana, although the specific assets involved remain undisclosed.

Understanding the Technology Behind the System

The Google Multi-Party Compute service operates by fragmenting a private key among several independent participants. Consequently, authorized entities can collaboratively sign blockchain transactions without exposing the entire key to any singular location.

For instance, a financial institution could store one fragment on its own hardware, another in Google Cloud, and a third with a different cloud provider. The system can also be configured to require multiple approvals—such as two out of three or five out of seven participants—before a transaction is executed.

Importantly, customers retain ultimate control of their keys. Google emphasizes that it cannot access the key fragments in an unencrypted format, even when they reside on its infrastructure. This added layer of security aims to build trust with financial institutions wary of potential vulnerabilities.

The service also features transaction policies that scrutinize requests before any signing takes place. Institutions can impose limits on destination addresses, set transfer caps, or necessitate additional approvals within Google’s Confidential Space environment.

Upon general availability, Google will support ECDSA and Ed25519 signing methods, with future upgrades to accommodate post-quantum cryptography also on the roadmap, although no specific timeline has been established.

The Importance of Protecting Private Keys

Compromised private keys remain a leading cause of losses in the crypto space. A report from Chainalysis highlighted that nearly 44% of all cryptocurrency thefts in 2024 were linked to private key compromises. In a notable incident last June, an attacker exploited seven private keys from a developer’s machine at Humanity Protocol, leading to unauthorized access and alterations on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.

As the threat landscape evolves, Google points to emerging concerns related to AI and quantum computing. The same Chainalysis report noted that scams involving AI tools yielded an average of $3.2 million per operation in 2025, a stark contrast to the $719,000 average for other scams.

Furthermore, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has cautioned that advancements in AI-driven mathematics could undermine certain cryptographic systems within a mere two years. While no operational quantum computer currently exists that could crack Bitcoin keys, approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin are considered potentially vulnerable due to the visibility of their public keys.

Google’s custody service is poised to compete with established players like Fireblocks, Fordefi, and BitGo. However, Google has not yet provided any performance metrics or comparisons against these competitors.

As the preview program progresses, details regarding testing partners and pricing remain undisclosed, but the tech giant’s entry into the crypto custody space marks a significant step forward in addressing longstanding security challenges within the industry.
