In a surprising yet orchestrated shift, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, disclosed on November 7 that its Chief Financial Officer, Kaiser Ng, is set to leave the company after more than five notable years. This revelation comes just nine days post a staggering hack that saw over $6 billion siphoned from the platform.
Justin Yek, previously a vice president at payment firm Airwallex, is slated to step into the role of CFO. Co-CEO Yi He confirmed that the transition plan had been in the works for the last six months, indicating that it was initiated well before the record breach on October 29.
Ng’s departure appears to be amicable, as he has expressed intentions to pursue a new venture, although specific details about his future endeavor remain undisclosed. He has held the position of CFO since January 2022, following a career that includes time at rival exchange Kraken.
The timing of this announcement is particularly poignant, coming shortly after Binance faced a significant security crisis. The hack, which was described by various sources as the largest in the history of cryptocurrency, involved the loss of $6.3 billion. Hackers executed a sophisticated operation that exploited vulnerabilities in employees’ computers, leveraging malware hidden in software downloads and orchestrating fake recruitment efforts to gain access to sensitive information.
Following the hack, Binance took swift action, replenishing approximately 95% of the affected assets and restoring withdrawal functionalities. As of November 2, the exchange reported that it had successfully managed to mitigate the impact of the theft on its users.
In the wake of the attack, blockchain analytics firm Elliptic noted that the perpetrators, identified as TraderTraitor—a hacking group with alleged ties to North Korea—had converted some of their stolen tokens into $124 million worth of Bitcoin since the incident.
This leadership change alongside the recent breach reflects the ongoing challenges and rapid evolution within the cryptocurrency sector. As Binance moves forward with Yek at the financial helm, the exchange aims to solidify its commitment to security and customer trust amidst a turbulent backdrop.
With new leadership in place, the crypto community will be watching closely to see how Binance navigates the aftermath of the hack and reinforces its defenses against future threats.
