Nvidia’s Earnings Surprise: Growth Amid Margin Concerns

Nvidia has once again proven its prowess in the tech industry, posting remarkable fiscal second-quarter 2027 results that have sent ripples through the stock market. The company reported a staggering revenue of $96.2 billion, easily surpassing Wall Street’s expectations of $92.27 billion and showcasing a remarkable 106% increase compared to the same quarter last year.

In terms of earnings per share, Nvidia delivered $2.22 on a non-GAAP basis, exceeding the anticipated $2.09. This significant performance is mirrored by the company’s GAAP net income, which more than doubled to $59.7 billion, further solidifying Nvidia’s financial standing.

One of the standout segments was the Data Center revenue, which soared to $89 billion, marking a 117% year-over-year growth and exceeding estimates of $85.4 billion. This impressive performance underscores the increasing demand for AI and cloud computing capabilities, areas where Nvidia has positioned itself as a leader.

Following the earnings call, Nvidia’s stock experienced a surge, climbing approximately 4% in after-hours trading, closing at $209.76 before the announcement.

Looking ahead, Nvidia provided an optimistic forecast for Q3, guiding revenue expectations to $108 billion, well above the consensus estimate of $103.9 billion. This positions Nvidia among a select group of S&P 500 companies that have reported over $100 billion in a single quarter. However, the guidance comes with a caveat: it assumes no Data Center compute revenue from China due to ongoing export restrictions on advanced AI processors.

While the revenue outlook is robust, the anticipated gross margin for the third quarter has raised eyebrows. Nvidia’s guidance of 74% represents a slight decline from the 75% margin reported in Q2. This dip was enough to cause initial concern among investors, highlighting the ongoing pressures related to rising costs in memory, financing, and infrastructure.

Thomas Monteiro, a senior analyst at Investing.com, noted that this margin forecast marks the first sequential decline in the current cycle, emphasizing the significance of cost pressures on Nvidia’s profitability.

Nvidia’s supply and capacity commitments have also seen a remarkable increase, surging to $279 billion as of July 26, up from $119 billion in the previous quarter. This substantial jump is primarily attributed to expanded memory and manufacturing capacity for both current and future products. Of this total, $92 billion is expected to be due within the remainder of fiscal 2027, with further commitments extending into fiscal 2028 and 2029.

CFO Colette Kress indicated that customer forecasts are pointing toward a doubling of growth next year, although Nvidia anticipates around 70% growth due to supply constraints. Meanwhile, the recently launched Vera Rubin platform has entered full production, operational across multiple cloud infrastructures, including Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

In a move that signals Nvidia’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure, the company has announced partnerships with major firms such as Apollo, BlackRock, and Goldman Sachs, aiming for over $500 billion in AI infrastructure buildout. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, has indicated that a price increase is forthcoming in Q1, suggesting that customers will still see strong returns from Nvidia systems.

As Nvidia continues to navigate the complexities of the AI-driven landscape, investor sentiment remains cautious yet optimistic, with many keeping a close eye on future earnings and margin performance.
