Bitcoin Dips Below $80,000 Amid Tech Selloff and Federal Reserve Caution

Bitcoin (BTC) has taken a significant hit, falling below the $80,000 threshold during Thursday’s Asian trading session. This decline marks a reversal from a two-day rally, with the cryptocurrency dropping from over $81,700 to approximately $79,800, further dragging the wider crypto market down.

The catalyst for this downturn can be traced back to the tech sector, where shares of Samsung plummeted more than 5% after the company’s semiconductor unit missed analyst expectations, igniting caution across global markets. The tech selloff has had a cascading effect, influencing other cryptocurrencies such as Ether, XRP, and Solana, which also recorded losses.

Samsung’s latest earnings report revealed a staggering 15-fold increase in operating profit, reporting 106.5 trillion won for the third quarter of 2026. However, this figure fell short of the 108.5 trillion won that analysts had anticipated, contributing to the decline in investor sentiment. The South Korean Kospi index dropped over 2%, while Nasdaq futures fell by 1.4%, reflecting a widespread pullback in technology stocks.

Compounding these issues, the Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark interest rates at 3.75%-4% during their recent meeting, with a vote of 10-2 against any rate hike. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh expressed concerns about persistent inflation, which has hovered above the 2% target for nearly six years. Market observers have noted a 78.4% probability of a quarter-point rate increase by December, indicating that traders are bracing for potential tightening of monetary policy.

The crypto futures market felt the brunt of this volatility, witnessing a staggering $356 million in liquidations over just 24 hours, with long positions alone accounting for $205 million of that total. Bitcoin futures saw liquidations amounting to $94 million, while ether futures contributed an additional $72 million.

Despite the current turbulence, analysts like Michaël van de Poppe remain optimistic about Bitcoin’s prospects for the quarter. He projects that Bitcoin could still reach the $90,000 to $95,000 range, suggesting that there remains a structural demand for the cryptocurrency even in the face of these market challenges. He noted that spot buyers are actively purchasing Bitcoin, while perpetual futures traders seem to be shorting the market, indicating a divergence in market sentiment.

As of the latest reports, Bitcoin is trading around $80,291, with many eyes now turning towards upcoming economic data releases, including the PCE inflation report and Q3 GDP figures, which could further influence market sentiment.

In summary, while Bitcoin’s recent dip below $80,000 may cause concern among investors, the underlying demand and potential for recovery remain evident, setting the stage for what could be an interesting end to the quarter.
